5 Signs of Poor Internal Drainage

Layering in Soil Profile

 1. Layering (black layer) in the soil profile- Layering makes it difficult for excess moisture to travel through the profile to the drain system.

Disease Pressure Increases

 2. Disease pressure increases- Weakened turf is more susceptible to disease requiring additional, preventative applications of fungicide.

Root Depth/Density Decreases

 3. Root depth and density decreases- Excessive moisture in the profile combined with high summer temperatures, cause heat stress, thus triggering root decline.

Thinning Turf

 4. Thinning turf- As the summer progresses, the continued stress from excess moisture and heat causes the turf plant to start thinning and reduces its ability to bounce back going into the winter months.

Unacceptable Playing Conditions

 5. Unacceptable playing conditions- The combination of layering, disease pressure, reduced roots and thinning turf produces unacceptable playing conditions leading into the winter months with a turf plant that has a reduced capacity to recuperate.
